Materials Engineering is the field of study in which the student acquires knowledge of basic sciences (physics and chemistry), as well as the science of ceramic materials, polymer materials, biomaterials, functional and composite materials, metals and metallic alloys, and extremely important corrosion protection for the economy. The essence of modern materials engineering is the ability to design, select and test materials for various applications with particular emphasis on advanced materials and on micro and nanotechnology. In this spirit, the students of the IM faculty are educated. The priority task of the teaching staff is to provide students with thorough knowledge about the relationships between the structure of materials and their functional properties, preparation for undertaking research activities and handling of specialized research equipment and processing equipment. In the field of Material Engineering, scientific work is carried out aimed at solving material problems occurring in industry, basic works whose aim is to learn and describe phenomena occurring in materials and work on the design and synthesis of new materials.
What we teach?
The field of Materials Engineering offers education at first and second level (engineering and master studies). At the first level studies, joint classes for students of the whole field are offered. The most important lectures from the point of view of engineering knowledge are: materials engineering and materials science, carbon materials, composites, ceramic and hybrid materials, technologically advanced materials, polymer plastics, materials recycling, materials testing methods.
Teaching staff
There are many indications that studies in materials engineering at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Wrocław University of Technology belong to the most interesting studies of this type in the country. The scientific staff has a great merit in the level of education. Its leading group is formed by the Directional Committee of Material Engineering consisting of independent scientific employees (currently 8 full professors and 8 employees with a postdoctoral degree). The pride of the Materials Engineering is Prof. Marek Samoć, who was awarded by the Foundation for Polish Science for "research into nanostructured materials for nonlinear optics". This award has been recognized as the greatest Polish scientific distinction for years. Professor Marek Samoć was appreciated for discovering the unusual optical properties of nanomaterials. They can be used, for example, in the transformation of optical signals, in biological imaging or in energy conversion. Also other researchers affiliated with the Faculty of Chemistry are high-class specialists, implementers of national and international research projects, having successes in cooperation with the industry, authors of implementations and patents, but above all scientists with very good scientific and gift achievements in magazines about international circulation.
Teaching facilities
Engineering and Polymer Technology Our facilities for the students of the Engineering and Polymer Specialties are laboratories of the Department of Engineering and Technology of Polymers. This specialty distinguishes the possibility of performing research and diploma theses on virtually all measuring devices and processing machines with which the graduate of this specialty meets in his future work. Students can learn how to work with injection molding machines, one- and two-screw extruders, a laboratory slotted extruder for obtaining multilayer composite films, handling gravimetric feeders, a granulator, ultrasonic and impulse welders. They are applying for the possibility of using endurance machines for testing (including the Instron machine with video recording and temperature chamber), a stress rheometer with a cone-plate and plate-plate system, a capillary rheometer. The Polymer Chemical Modification Laboratory enjoys great interest, in which students have the opportunity to learn about electrospinning and electrospray techniques. Practical knowledge of the operation and operation of DSC, HP-DSC, TG, DTA, DMTA, FTIR spectrometers and the ability to interpret the obtained results is also important. These skills are desired by employers from the household appliances, AutoMoto sectors, polymer manufacturers and processors, and material recycling companies.
Chemical Metallurgy and Metal Corrosion Students of this specialty have at their disposal 4 teaching laboratories: Laboratory of Electron Microscopy (scanning electron microscope equipped with EDS (determination of chemical composition), EBSD (crystallographic orientation)), Materials Testing Laboratory (microhardness meter, 3D profilometer, devices for sample preparation), Laboratory of Research Corrosive (electrochemical set, potentiostats), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Laboratory XPS (material surface testing).
Advanced Functional Materials Also in this specialty students use high-end cameras and measuring devices to replace only the femtosecond high-power laser set Quantronix Integra and Quantronix Palitra with parametric amplifier, laser sets for dynamic holography (argon lasers, He-Ne, Nd: YAG 7 ns, Nd: YAG cw and OPO, EA LC SLM, laser diodes), Shimadzu UV-VIS spectrometers, Perkin Elmer), atomic force microscope (Dimension V, AFM Veeco), scanning electron microscope (JEOL JSM-6610LV), polarimetric microscope with laser femtosecond. Students use a variety of research methods, including the third order nonlinear optical property measurement in the femtosecond range, so-called "z-scan" technique, Langmuir-Blodgett's fabrication technique.
After the graduation
Most of the students of Materials Engineering will certainly continue their academic work, by choosing one of our specializations. Employment prospects in industry are primarily innovative start-ups and industrial laboratories using modern materials testing methods. Students of the Polymer Engineering and Technology specialization will probably use contacts of the Polymer Engineering and Technology Department with 3M companies, Whirlpool, Mobi sp. Zoo, Macopharma in Wrocław, Armacell in Środa Śląska, Guardian Automotive in Bolesławiec, LG and Raflatac in Kobierzyce, Remy Automotive in Świdnica, Toyota Motor Industries in Jelcz Laskowice, Via Con in Rydzyna, Faurecia in Legnica, OST-BUD in Bełchatów, Philips in Pabianice, Thermaflex in Żarów and many others in Lower Silesia and in the country. Choose the Materials Engineering, you will not regret it!!!
